*Note: Serbian white and red Easter Eggs

After World War II came to an end, many people in Eastern European countries were not allowed to attend church services.  The Communist party taught the children that there was no God.  However, not wanting their grandchildren to grow up without a knowledge of the Savior, the grandmothers would teach the children about Jesus within the walls of their own homes.  Then, every year at Easter, the families would attend a midnight service.  When they returned home, they would stay up all night talking about Jesus and (*) decorating red Easter eggs.  For the people in Serbia, eggs symbolized the eternal life of Jesus.  According to some legends, the white egg Mary left at her son’s tomb as sacrifice turned red after His resurrection.  These red eggs hold deep meaning for the people of Serbia.

Many of the traditions from World War II still stands.  It is not uncommon to see a red egg displayed prominently in a Serbian house long after Easter has passed.  This egg is often called “the housekeeper” and it is supposed to guard the house until the next Easter.]

The lady who told this story said that one Easter that she and her husband invited their children’s grandmother to dinner.  Before they set down to eat, they talked about the story of the grandmothers in Serbia who taught their grandchildren about Jesus Christ.   She placed one egg in the middle of the table.  Then they asked the grandmother to share her feelings about Jesus Christ. The grandchildren set transfixed.  She said a beautiful spirit filled the room.  It was an evening they will always remember.

(*) To make red dye, use the skins of yellow onions.  Place the onion skins in a saucepan with 2 cups of water and a tablespoon of vinegar.  Bring to a gently boil for 30 minutes.  Let it cool to room temperature.  Wash 3 uncooked eggs and place in onion water.  Return pan to heat and simmer about 15 minutes.  Remove from heat and leave eggs in the water for 20 minutes.  Put in refrigerator overnight to achieve a deep red.  When the eggs are completely dry polish with olive oil. Debbie and I had prayer together; she is washing clothes and I am working in the backyard.  Later I went to Lowe's and picked up some concentrated Round-UP to spray the areas where we took the sod and grass out to plant fruit trees, grapevines, and flowers.  I also checked on weed barriers and trim-edging.  I came home and had brunch before going back out and digging up the grave vines and breaking the roots loos so they will have room to grow before replanting them. I went to the Legacy Center to exercise for about an hour.  I called and talked to Ora, my sister, who is in a lot of pain and not doing well.  I called and talked to Mike Coultas, an old friend, who is going in soon to have cataracts off his eyes and have his left knee replaced.  I called and talked to Earlton B. Youngblood who had taken his wife shopping.  He wants me to come by and see him and his wife, Sandy when I am back in Georgia again.

This afternoon Lyndann Cheney, Anndalyn's mother, was following Pattrick and the family to Audrey's ball game.  She turned left on a yellow light and a young man in a truck ran the yellow light, coming the other way, and hit her Lyndann's car in the side.  She had her seat belt but no one else was in the car.  Ellie planned to ride with her grandmother but changed her mind at the last minute.  If she had been in the car, she most likely would have been killed.  Lyndann is in the hospital and having surgery.  Her back, neck, and collar bone are broken and her internal organs are messed up.  Natalie from St. George is here in town for a baby shower.  She went into labor this afternoon and is having a baby.  George and Laura Gourley are having a new niece.
